Vox magazine - Radio On! - B

A tape of live Radio One recordings. Sleeve didn't carry much information which is a shame as it would have been interesting to know where/when certain tracks were from. The Orb track is certainly an interesting release and ends with a spirited rendition of "I do like to be beside the seaside"!

B1 Shamen, The - L.S.I.
B4 Orb, The - Into The 4th Dimension

NME - Department Of Enjoyment - A

A tape from 1984. Interesting the stuff that the NME thought was cool from these old tapes. Seems to have taken a lead from Peel and Kershaw - mostly alternative with a bit of reggae, a bit of world music and a bit of hip hop. The Orange Juice track is interestingly produced by the legendary Dennis Bovell.

Jeremy Hardy - Speaks to the nation #1

I don't think I've put up any comedy here before but it's probably just chance - I've got quite a bit in my cassette collection ready to be ripped. Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation was a running series on Radio 4. You might know him from his appearances on the News Quiz but he's been going for longer than that and as far as I'm concerned, he's a genius.

DJ Muro - Diggin in the crates

Side B of the third installment of the master Muro's dip into breaks. The idea of sample-spotting mixtapes seems passe (and a bit masturbatory) now, and indeed Muro concentrates on the recognisable to the detrement of retaining a standard in the music included. Nevertheless, we loved it at the time it came out and it's still a pretty good listen now.

John Peel - Autumn 1991 - side A

Now, here's a thing. It's not my fault but I am guilty of it myself.

This is a tape of a few John Peel shows from the early 90s but the person who recorded it has edited out the bits of Peel and just kept the music. It seems stupid now and as I said, I used to do it myself with Kiss FM, Jeff Young, Mike Allen, Red Alert, Sandy Martin and lots of other things that would have made an incredible historical record if I had left them with links, chat and ads intact. At the time, of course, we thought that Peel and the rest would go on forever and that the ads were just a pain. We didn't see a day that that dive cafe on the Gloucester Road or the damp club in the side streets would become a Costa Coffee and we'd miss them and yearn to hear some cheap radio spot advertising their services. And we didn't realise that Peel would one day die and leave us without his deep, reassuring voice.

Anyway. Enough. The music is still an interesting snapshot and there is, at least, a tracklist for me to copy down here.

Sun 27/10/91
The stairs - Weedbus
Wicker Spogt - Baby come home
Slam - A turner
Crust - Mosquito Beach

Sat 02/11/91
Howling Wolf - ? (This forms the skanking backround to a great UK hip hop tune. Would be good to know the title of this)
New Fast Automatic Daffodils - All over my face
Gallon drunk - Rollin home
Foreheads in a fishtank - Sylvester's mother
Nirvana - Even in his youth
Foreheads in a fishtank - Happy shopper
Milk - is that it?

Dirty Beatniks mix - 1997

From Galaxy radio (when it was just in Bristol!) in December 1997, Neil Beatnik lays down an excellent mix spanning hip hop and house. It could be called breakbeat, I guess but from before all the stupid electro sounds started invading that genre. Loads of what sounds like exclusive cuts and remixes.

Coughing up fire - Saxon studio international

A short section from this live LP from 1984 on greensleeves records. The sound is as muddy as you'd expect (this really bugs me - like with Radio 1 coverage of Glastonbury or anything live. Why can't they get a signal from the mixing desk and then add a little bit of mic-ed audience sound over the top? What it sounds like they to is get a minidisc with a mic and go and stand in the toilets to record the whole thing.)

Anyhow, as a point of interest, this record provides samples for Fatboy Slim and Chase and Status and has some good MC action to recommend it.

Hip hop and breaks - Side 1

This is a tape done for me by a friend. It isn't named very accurately as it has no hip hop (unless you count the awful Audio Bullys track that I think I cut out of this rip) and few proper breakbeats. It is a nice collection of tracks, however, and makes a great listen. ***Update - thanks to Matty for the tracklist - only a couple of blanks to fill in***

As a point of interest he's only got one deck and a pause button but my new version of Acid music studio crossfades things quite nicely. So at some points where I've cut things out you'll hear things blending.

Here's the other side of volume 5. These tapes may be made up from a few different shows. Listening to them now the most striking thing is how good they still all sound. Now that's what I call reggae - side A

Today's post is something a bit special. It's a tape of a soundsystem/soundclash. It sounds like it's from the early 80s and could possibly originate in Bristol. Beyond that I know nothing at all about it other than it's probably the best 80-something minutes of reggae you could ever hope for. The sort of thing you treasure forever and don't just go giving away on a blog. So why? I'll tell you why. 20 years of looking and no idea of any of the tunes. No idea on the artists (apart from H.A.), no idea or the tunes, no idea of the riddims, never heard any of them since. Nor have any of the reggae heads I've played it to. Are they all dubplates?

Any solid info on any of this will be rewarded with some tapes/CDs/something in the post. Feel free to comment or email me directly at doooix@gmail.com
